Dr Miles Russell FSA

Dr Miles Russell is a senior lecturer in prehistoric and Roman archaeology with over 25 years experience of archaeological fieldwork and publication.

In 1988, after graduating from the Institute of Archaeology, University College London with a BA in Roman Archaeology, Miles worked as a field officer for the UCL Field Archaeology Unit and as a project manager for the Oxford Archaeological Unit on a variety of sites across southern and central England.

In 1993 he joined Bournemouth University and has since conducted fieldwork on projects in England, Wales, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Germany, Sicily and Russia. He is director of Regnum and co-director of the Durotriges Project, both investigating the transition from the Iron Age to Roman period across SE and SW Britain from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD.

He gained his doctorate, on Neolithic monumental architecture, in 2000 and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 2006.

Miles is a regular contributor to television and radio, his most recent appearances being in Time Team, Timewatch, The Seven Ages of Britain, Mysteries in the Landscape, the One Show and Digging for Britain.

He has authored eleven books, including Piltdown Man: the Secret Life of Charles Dawson, Monuments of the British Neolithic: the roots of Architecture, Flint Mines in Neolithic Britain, Rough Quarries Rocks and Hills: John Pull and the Neolithic Flint Mines of Sussex, Prehistoric Sussex, Roman Sussex, Digging Holes in Popular Culture: Archaeology and Science Fiction, Bloodline: the Celtic Kings of Roman Britain and (with Stuart Laycock) UnRoman Britain: Exposing the Myth of Britannia.
